Rodney Murphy is a founding partner and President of Toronto-based Kilometre Music Group, a ground-breaking music publishing and rights management company. Kilometre Music Group operates the Barometer Global Music Royalty Fund, whose mission is to build a premier catalog of high quality, enduring music copyrights and royalty streams. To date, The Fund’s investment in music rights is over $130 million USD and has solidified Kilometre Music Group's position as a leading force in modern music publishing.
Rodney’s primary role at Kilometre is to source, negotiate and acquire the music rights of the biggest hits by the biggest artists in the biggest era in music history. Rodney also leads Kilometre’s creative team in the signing and development of the next generation of great music talent from their Kilometre House studios in downtown Toronto. To date, Kilometre has signed 11 songwriters, producers and artists to their roster who have collectively achived over 5 billion streams to date.
Through Rodney’s deep industry relationships and extensive experience negotiating catalog deals, Kilometre Music Group has built an impressive portfolio of over 2000 songs, with 31 titles in Spotify’s Billions Club, including 8 of the 20 most streamed Spotify songs of all time: The Weeknd’s “Blinding Lights”, “Save Your Tears”, “Starboy” and “Die For You”, as well as and “Sunflower” by Post Malone, Drake’s “One Dance”, “Levitating” by Dua Lipa and “Closer” by the Chainsmokers ft. Halsey. Other key songs in the portfolio are “Lavendar Haze” and “Karma” by Taylor Swift, “Havana” by Camilla Cabello, Post Malone’s “Circles”, Flo Rida’s “Whistle”, Pitbull’s “Timber”, Travis Scott’s “Butterfly Effect” and “Sucker” by the Jonas Brothers.
Before starting Kilometre Music Group, Rodney was a 17-year veteran of SOCAN, serving most recently as Vice President of A&R and Membership. In this role he created and managed the company’s member relations strategy servicing Canadian songwriters, screen copmposers and music publishers. Rodney also managed and mentored SOCAN’s A&R team of 10 creative staff in offices in Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and Los Angeles. In his role at SOCAN, Rodney worked with many of today’s global hit makers, including Murda Beatz (Migos, Travis Scott, Drake), Daheala (The Weeknd), Frank Dukes (Camilla Cabello, Post Malone, Taylor Swift), OZ (Drake, Future, DJ Khalid, Travis Scott), Boi-1da (Drake, Jack Harlow), Jessie Reyez, Shawn Mendes and many others.
Rodney has also worked at CKCU FM in Ottawa, Sony Music Canada and BBC Radio 1 in London, United Kingdom.
